Please ask your question here: How does the IRS know if a taxpayer is out of the country on April 15th for the automatic 2 month extension?

Original Fast Forward Academy test bank question:
Form 4868, Application for Automatic Extension of Time to File U.S. Individual Income Tax Return, will provide the taxpayer with the following:

A. An automatic extension of 2 months for taxpayers out of the country on April 15
B. An automatic extension of 4 months to pay the taxes due
C. An automatic extension of 6 months to file the return
D. An automatic extension of 4 months to file the return

Explanation:
A request for an automatic 6-month extension may be filed (via paper form 4868 or electronically) by the due date of the return. For most taxpayers this allows until October 15 to submit a return. The IRS will automatically allow a taxpayer who is out of the country on April 15th an extra 2 months to file their return and pay any tax due.

Rain Hughes Thr IRS knows because you tell them. To use this automatic 2-month extension, you must attach a statement to your return explaining what qualifies you for the extension.

That is not true,You can file your tax return any time before the extension expires.

Do not attach a copy of Form 4868 to your return.

I never said file 4868. Here is a direct quote from Pub 54 "How to get the extension.   To use this automatic 2-month extension, you must attach a statement to your return explaining which of the two situations listed earlier qualified you for the extension."

Rain is right, atttach a statement not the form 4868, that form is for 6 months extension, but you still have to pay the tax by the due date not the extension date.
